While some of you are trying to increase milk supply, others have a true problem: too much breastmilk! While it might not sound like a problem it can really be one! From recurring blocked milk ducts, a fussy baby or a baby who coughs a lot on the breast to constant mastitis. With lots of little tricks and nursing positions, this can usually be resolved (call me if not!) but what to do with all the milk that’s left? DONATE IT!
I recently had a table at the Baby Expo in Brooklyn where I met the wonderful team of the NY milk bank, a non-profit organization. They opened in September 2016 and are now dispensing milk to over 21 hospital NICUs and countless out-patients. They advocate for Medicaid coverage of donor milk for the smallest babies and hope to see that expand so that any baby who is in need of safe pasteurized human donor milk, can have access to it.
